Music Feature: Tegan And Sara

Tegan and Sara are identical twin sisters, born in Calgary, who perform as singer-songwriters. Their latest CD, The Con, (available at Megatunes) was released on July 24, 2007. It features chapters not songs which indicates the importance of story-telling in their lyrics. They began playing in their high school’s music studio, originally under the name Plunk. From there they quickly graduated to playing Lillithfair and touring with musicians such as Neil Young, The Pretenders, and The Killers.

The sisters both write and sing, often with the writer of a song taking the lead vocally on that piece. Together, they come up with some beautiful harmonies, such as on Soil Soil. The sister's voices have an almost child-like quality to them in many songs, but the topics of the songs are universal. Themes of love, longing, and trying to control one’s actions when emotions want to take over can be found in many of the songs, such as Burn Your Life Down and The Con. Despite having similar themes, the songs have a wide range of musical styles including electronic elements, as found in Are You Ten Years Ago. All of the songs have great hooks and it won’t be long before at least one of them takes hold.
