Music Feature: Hot Little Rocket
Hot Little Rocket has been recording and playing shows for almost 10 years, and is finally starting to get some well-deserved recognition.
They recently won a $15,000 prize in X 92.9's Xposure 2007 contest and just released their fifth CD “How to Lose Everything,” available at
Megatunes. They’ve toured tirelessly across the country and around the world,
including a stint in China. In 2006, they travelled to Chicago to work on the “How to Lose Everything” CD with legendary recording
engineer, Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Pixies, etc), looking for a more raw sound than their previous work. Hopeful that their CD would
eventually reach the masses, they figured if it didn’t, at least they would have an expensive memento of the occasion. The CD was
released by File Under Music last spring.
Despite the group’s name sounding somewhat reminiscent of a country band, this CD is definitely rock music. It runs the gamut with songs
such as Like Killers and Do The Hustled as more of an old-time (think
80s, not 60s) vibe, driven by the drum beat to It Gets Dark with a more alternative sound. The lyrics
have many interesting twists and turns and it is up to the listener to attempt to make sense of them all. For example, who can listen to
the line “maybe you want to change your name into something I can’t even say” from Let's Play In Traffic
and not wonder if it’s a dig at Prince’s idea to change his name to an unpronounceable symbol. Overall the album is a good example of rock
music with catchy melodies that easily get stuck in your head - which is a good thing because you need a few listens to figure each song out.
