Music Feature: Feist
You may have heard her on the radio recently, but did you know she is a Calgary girl? Feist, born Leslie Feist, grew up in
Calgary, starting out on the punk scene with a high school band and competing in Battles of the Bands. Her band Placebo
won and they got a gig opening for the Ramones. While it is quite different than her current sound, she was, for a time, a
hard rocker. Then a strained voice forced her to take some time off. While her voice recovered, she took a break from
singing and started playing the guitar, getting more of the pop sound that can be found on her third solo album, The Reminder,
available at Megatunes.
While it is not a “live” album, it is certainly more “real world” than a typical studio album. Feist gathered together musicians in a French mansion, where they recorded. It’s an interesting choice for an artist who doesn’t like to blur the lines between performing and recording. Various background noises can be heard on songs, such as the footsteps on My Moon My Man, the song currently featured on pop radio. The bird songs on the folk ballad The Park, though, were apparently added in Toronto as whenever they tried recording the birds in France, something would interrupt the process, such as a truck driving down the lonely country road where they were based.
How My Heart Behaves, a haunting love song, features vocals from Eirik Glambek Boe. The
beautiful, delicate vocals and instruments could be one of the reasons this former punk rock chick is now being described as a
torch singer. She is much more than that, though, and
there is a wide range of songs on the CD, including Sealion
which features handclaps and a backing gospel choir.
