Music Feature: Woodpigeon
Woodpigeon, our feature artist this month, is not an easy band to describe, because it’s always changing. The one constant
is Mark Hamilton who writes the songs and brought about the first couple incarnations of the band. He originally started
Woodpigeon Dived By Antelope Equals Squirrel when he was in Scotland, where he lived for a time. When he returned to
Calgary, the name was shortened and he teamed with Kenna Burima and numerous other musicians. The group officially has
seven members, but during shows they can double those numbers, including musicians, vocalists, and visual artists. The
long titles remain in songs, such as “if only i were a painter, i would paint for you the
moon” and, “that was good but you can do better / closing credits” which despite the
title has a cheery, upbeat sound to it. These are two of the songs that have caused listeners to draw comparisons to 70s
folk music.
Songbook is the title of the CD (available at Megatunes) and it’s appropriate because the songs feature very personal lyrics, although Hamilton hopes listeners will put their own spin on the lyrics and the songs will all come to mean different things to different people. For example, there actually is a Ms. Stacey Watson but the song “ms. stacey watson, stepney green” is more about the person she was helping Hamilton get over. The CD offers a fuller sound than many pop CDs due to the huge variety of instruments used. In addition to more traditional instruments, like guitars, drums, and pianos, Woodpigeon features flutes, horns, accordions, and glockenspiels. It’s hard to categorize the music, although orchestral pop seems to be the term in flavour at the moment. The songs feature catchy pop hooks but if you listen closely, they have very intense and often dark themes. “A sad country ballad for a tired superhero” is based on a script Hamilton wrote with a friend in Spain that is about a woman whose husband is killed when a superhero makes the choice to save his girlfriend instead of a busload of innocent civilians.
