Music Feature: Ben Rose

Our feature artist for the month of March is Ben Rose. Ben describes himself as a bubblegum protest singer. Just what is that? Perhaps it is songs with meaning that are also fun to listen to. The songs on his initial CD, The Cost, are all catchy, with elements of reggae, bluegrass, funk, and swing in addition to memorable hooks and lyrics. The Cost is available at Megatunes.

Originally from Saskatchewan, Ben grew up surrounded by music. He first appeared on stage with his parents, entertainers Chuck and Rhonda Rose, when he was two years old. He spent his early years perfecting his harmonies with his younger sister. During a European trip when he was twenty, Ben realized that he could finance his travels through his music and began busking in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, and France.

The opening song on The Cost, I Came Undone, features Ben’s father, Chuck on harmonica. I Don’t Care, featuring Tim Williams, has a more traditional reggae beat to it. And then there’s The Roasterie, to give the CD some local flavour. Your Sister is an ode to bad jobs everywhere - beware the PG lyrics if there are kids around when you’re listening.
