Calgary Culture Club Music Feature: Chad VanGaalen

Our featured artist this month is Chad VanGaalen and he provides us with tremendous variety within one album. Chad is a visual artist as well as a musician and is also known for his drawing, painting, and animation work, including album covers for other musicians.

Skelliconnection is a hard album to describe, because the songs are all so different from each other. Chad’s original plan was for the record to be experimental piano compositions with drum machine accompaniment, but he eventually decided that that might be too much for his audiences. However, if experimental is what you’re looking for, check out Dandruff. If you’re looking for something more traditional, try Burn 2 Ash. But Chad VanGaalen traditional is not typical traditional and his style varies from post-punk to jazz-inflected synth-pop explorations. And if you’re looking for a Neil Young sound, try Wing Finger or Mini T.V.’s. Skelliconnection is available at Megatunes

Chad does most of his recording at home and his songs are home-grown using everything from the instruments he creates himself out of children’s toys to the ukulele, guitar, keyboards, flute, drum, and sequencers. He has toured across Canada and the U.S.
