Calgary Culture Club Music Feature: The Dudes

The Dudes kicked off the new year at the launch party of a new rock alternative station in Calgary (X92.9 FM), so it’s only fitting that they kick off the Calgary Culture Club’s new feature about local musicians. Originally formed in the mid-90's, the band has been around for about 10 years, with various members. Their style is described as indie/rock/soul.

Their second CD Brain, Heart, Guitar, featuring 13 songs, is available at Megatunes and was released June 27, 2006. Brain, Heart, Guitar starts with a number of rocking songs with great hooks. After listening to a few songs, you start paying attention to the lyrics which have a sarcastic twist to them. The liner notes warn, "These songs may very well be about you," and it’s easy to see people you know in many of the songs. They’re a Comin’, Do the Right Thing, and Mendoza Line (Whoa Caroline) are all quite catchy and could be played on repeat themselves. Don't Talk slows things down a bit as it offers advice on the important topic of making love.

The band on the CD is Dan Vacon (vocals/guitar), Pat Downing (bass/backing vocals), Bob Quashnick (guitar/backing vocals), and Scott Ross (drums/backing vocals). Jon Hopkins has now replaced Pat Downing on bass.
