Music Feature: Steve Pineo
Our feature artist this month is Steve Pineo. Best known for the song Canadian Man, Steve has been a fixture on the
Calgary scene for many years. Last month, he released his latest CD, When I Grow Up,
(available at Megatunes) with a show at The Ironwood, which was
well-attended by CCC members. The first half of the show consisted of songs from the new CD while Steve played some of
his other material in the second set. If the concert is any indication, this CD has more of a folk-based sound to it
than the older material.
It’s hard to choose a few songs from the CD to say, “This is what the CD is.” There is such a huge variety, from the whimsical and autobiographical title track When I Grow Up (I Wonder What I’ll Be) to the calypso sound of In The Dominion of Mr. Klein. Every song has a story behind it, and you can find small snippets of the story on the CD liner. The Commissionaire’s Song resonates with those who have ever had, or tried, to argue their way out of a parking ticket - or really anyone who has dealt with petty bureaucracies.
While the songs on the CD are driven by Steve’s guitar playing, you can find everything from mandolin to clarinet on
tracks such as Has Anybody Got A Light. At the show itself, Steve joked that their
goal was to have every band member play a different instrument for each song.
