NOTE: As the purpose of the event is to explore Inglewood, please don't register if you don't plan on meeting us for breakfast as that is when we'll be nailing down our schedule for the remainder of the day!
**********
Join me for a day to discover the community of Inglewood! I've been wanting to check out the used book and record stores in the area as well as just walk around and discover some places that I usually just end up driving by. There are several antique stores and lots of other unique, one of a kind shops. We'll stop in and see our friends at Tea Trader while we're walking around too (watch for upcoming tea events on our calendar!).
There are several book clubs ongoing and, as a coordinator, I know which books are sitting in the schedule waiting to be released by the coordinators. There are also always M.A.N.'s (Music Appreciation Nights/Nooners) throughout the year that I always need to find music for. Check the bottom of the write-up for a listing of upcoming book club books and MAN themes.
We'll begin the day with breakfast at Kane's Harley Davidson Diner in Inglewood at 8:00AM sharp. There is a pay parking lot across the street.
Since we're at this end of Inglewood we'll start with Recordland and Fairs Fair Bookstore.
Fairs Fair has several locations around the city but I think this is the largest. And as for Recordland, this is what our friend Rhonda quoted in the event she had there a few years ago: "If you don't already know this place, prepare to be blown away as this is probably the BEST-kept secret in Canada. I have visited dozens of second-hand record stores across the Great White North. Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton and even that bastion of musical genius known as Montreal have NOTHING on this shop in Calgary. They have tonnes (and I really mean tonnes) of CDs from floor to ceiling, as well as old 45's, 8-tracks, boxed sets, VHS, DVD's and an absolutely MASSIVE room dedicated solely to old vinyl. All their vinyl is kept in plastic, and is quite cheap. If you're into 'older prog' this is the place to go. I can't guarantee that you'll find IQ, Glass hammer or the like there, but personally I've dropped hundreds of dollars in this wonder of all wonders."
We can maybe drop our purchases at our vehicles and then we'll start the wander. As some of us will be interested in different stores, I suggest we go at our own pace and meet up someplace for lunch about 11:30 AM. We can decide where while we eat breakfast. Some personal faves are Dragon Pearl (chinese), Spolumbos (deli) or the Ironwood. However, I've been to all these and I wouldn't mind trying something new. :-)
After lunch at whereever we decide to meet up at, we can wander for a while longer. I will look up the community schedule before the event so we know if there's anything interesting happening in the afternoon. If nothing else, the Ironwood has a Blues Jam that afternoon starting at 2:00 PM hosted by Don Yuzwak. We could always end up there and hoist a beverage or two and enjoy their always warm hospitality. Another possibility is to head back to the other end where we parked and visit the Hose and Hound Pub to unwind and debrief.
